Wet Scrubbers

Industrial Wet Scrubbers for Acid Gas Removal

Our wet scrubbers remove acid gases from any industrial off-gas stream by drawing it through a fine spray of alkaline solution, absorbing hydrogen chloride, sulphur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride while cooling the gas on its way to the stack. Designed and manufactured by Macrotec, with over 40 years of experience in high-temperature process equipment, and supplied as a standalone system fitted to furnaces, boilers and other combustion processes, not only our own incinerator range.

How It Works

Counter-Current Alkaline Absorption

Hot off-gas is drawn upward through the scrubber vessel against a descending spray of alkaline solution. The fine droplets give a large surface area for gas-liquid contact, so acid gas molecules dissolve into the liquid and the gas stream cools rapidly as it passes through, before continuing on to the stack.

The alkaline reagent, typically sodium hydroxide, reacts with hydrogen chloride, sulphur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride to form soluble salts, which collect in the vessel sump. A pH-controlled dosing loop keeps reagent concentration matched to the inlet acid-gas loading, and an optional downstream activated carbon reactor can be added where trace organics or heavy metals also need to be captured.

Because the process uses water and produces a reaction liquor, wet scrubbing suits sites with a reliable water supply and a route for treating the resulting effluent. Where water is scarce or effluent handling is impractical, our ceramic filtration system reaches comparable compliance using a dry process instead.

The vessel, spray stages and dosing skid are supplied as a standalone system, engineered around your gas volume and inlet loading, and retrofitted to an existing furnace, boiler or thermal process off-gas duct, not only supplied as part of a new Macrotec incinerator.

Features & Benefits

Engineered Around Your Gas Stream

High-efficiency acid gas absorption

A fine alkaline spray gives intimate gas-liquid contact, absorbing hydrogen chloride, sulphur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride from the gas stream before it reaches the stack.

Quenches and cools the gas stream

Contact with the spray cools hot off-gas rapidly on its way through the vessel, protecting downstream ductwork, dampers and instrumentation from thermal stress.

pH-controlled reagent dosing

A dosing loop keeps reagent concentration matched to inlet acid-gas loading, so removal performance holds as loading varies through a shift rather than drifting with it.

Optional activated carbon reactor

Add a downstream activated carbon stage where trace organics or heavy metals must also be captured, without redesigning the scrubber vessel itself.

Retrofits to existing plant

Sized and fitted to an existing furnace, boiler or thermal process duct, not only supplied as part of a new incinerator, so an ageing off-gas system can be brought into compliance without replacing it.

Sized to your gas volume

The vessel, spray system and dosing skid are specified around your actual inlet gas volume and acid-gas loading, not sold as a generic, one-size unit.

Compliance & Certification

Acid Gas Removal, Independently Certified

Wet scrubbers are specified to help meet the acid-gas limits that govern our clients' operations, supporting the EU Industrial Emissions Directive (2010/75/EU) and South African NEM:AQA, with the applicable limits and removal efficiency confirmed for each project. Where water or effluent handling is impractical, our ceramic filtration system reaches comparable compliance using no water at all. Our quality, environmental and occupational health and safety management systems are independently certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
